I can't really complain, though, since the book is still very well-written and provides a good summary of the events that occurred during his lifetime. View 2 comments.

What do I rate it? To answer this question, I have to first answer as to what am I rating it on. For the way it is written, I give it a 4. In between, it sort of gets confusing, Though I understand the reason for that is not on the part of the author.

People in Arabia had a penchant for some names and people for the part had the same names and it got confusing as to who was being referred to at the time. For the subject the matter of the book, I believe I am not qualified to rate that. Thus, the rating will be a 4. Why I believe I am not qualified for rating the subject matter is because this is sensitive information and in places also differs from what I have been hearing since I was a kid.

As of right now, with my limited very limited research into the subject, I cannot say which incidents happened and how they happened in some cases minute details differ from what I had previously been told. Before reading this book I had heard many positive reviews about this author. Martin Lings was a British convert in Islam in the 20th century. He wrote this book for a predominantly non-Muslim audience I believe.

As stated in the titel the life story of Prophet Muhammed peace and blessing be upon, is based on the earlier sources. He pretty much translated it into English. The book is written in a story-like way and Before reading this book I had heard many positive reviews about this author.

The book is written in a story-like way and not just a basic summations of events that happened in the Prophet's life peace and blessing be upon him. Martin lings has done an excellent job in writing this book and making it accessible to non-arabic readers. His style is very easy to read but still eloquent. I must say that in the beginning he does go into a lot of detail with all the tribes, their names and their chieftains.

This can be a bit confusing. But I found an audio bridge of this book on Youtube. Like I said it is an audio bridge and some major events are left out.

So I wouldn't listen only. Big thumbs up for the voice actor, Sean Berry. His voice definitely made it more enjoyable to listen. I gave this book 4 out 5 stars, because I was inform of some inaccuracies in this book, well it depends upon your own beliefs.

In the beginning he mentioned the story of Abraham as is told in the Bible, not the Koranic version. And he also relates some weak hadiths and probably fabricated ones, other than that this book was very good. A very refreshing way to read the life story of our beloved Prophet Muhammad peace and blessing be upon him. Both for muslim and non-Muslim readers! Jun 28, Medhian Ramadhika rated it really liked it.

Two thumbs up for this book: A good book for those who want a quick but enjoyable read on the seerah of Rasulullah s. As a muslim reading it, I appreciate that it attempted to provide glimpses of intimate accounts of the Prophet s.

It almost feel like you're reading a novel and not a heavy textbook like how other seerah books can feel.

Quite disappointed though that it had very little to talk about "Isra' and Mi'raj", one of the biggest event in our Prophet's life but was mentioned almost in passing. I guess for non Muslims, this book can provide an understanding how the Muslims view Prophet Muhammad s. The story is given in its true context without any real interpretation, rather that is left to the reader.

My advice for Muslims who want to pick up this book: This was the first time I have read so much about Muhammad so I am not qualified to rate. I give 4 stars based on what I learned from the book and what others have said about it's credibility. I took away 1 star because of the main difficulty with the writing itself. The addition of so many minor characters added much confusion to an already difficult read.

The names and relationships can be hard to follow and many should have been left out or sent to footnotes. Otherwise it read almost as an hi This was the first time I have read so much about Muhammad so I am not qualified to rate. Otherwise it read almost as an historical novel written by a believer.

The author got me to imagine a very foreign life and times. This linear account, from childhood to hours after his passing, is easy to follow, and the index and map, makes it a convenient go-to if the need to return to certain points arises. It has footnote references to Quran, and the revelations are here put in clear context. Very good follow-up after reading Quran for the first time.

However, the names of people and their genealogy is sometimes a bit overwhelming to someone who is not accustomed to Arabic family customs. But I can not say anything abou This linear account, from childhood to hours after his passing, is easy to follow, and the index and map, makes it a convenient go-to if the need to return to certain points arises.

But I can not say anything about its authenticity or possible biases, until I have read a few more biographies in the same genre View all 7 comments.

I really enjoyed reading this book, especially when reading about the battles fought and about the justice and rule of Islam. I learnt some things I did not know about the 'rules of engagement' and about how to treat others.

I am not entirely sure of some of the facts towards the end though. Allah hu a3lam only god knows if it is true.

I have not yet done my research to either prove or disprove it. A complete encyclopedia of the life of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon Him from his great-grandfather till his death. Enjoyed every bit of it. The narrations are full of sources and outlined key details of the life of Prophet. Definitely cried in the last chapter where the author penned the details of Prophet sickness and how he meets his creator.

I don't know what to say in order to adequately express how absolutely delightful and exquisite Muhammad: His Life Based on the Earliest Sources is. Martin Lings took on a massive responsibility to portray the life of such an important man accurately, and deserves a lot of credit for it.

This work is a masterpiece, threading together verses, ahadith, and Ling's own narrative together for a perfectly cohesive picture of Muhammad SAW. Its strength has to be in its combination of both beautiful wow. Its strength has to be in its combination of both beautiful storytelling style and factual accuracy with, I've heard, the exception of a few things that I've not looked into yet.

Because it is written like a vivid novel in many places, Lings connects you to Muhammad SAW on a personal level and I was able to see many of the scenes in my mind's eye. I was so invested in it that I cried several times throughout, but especially at the end. I appreciate the fact that Lings included controversial aspects of Muhammad's SAW life here, and in no way engaged in apologetics. I have noticed that many other modern Muslims tiptoe around these issues, and often completely avoid speaking about them in fear of negative reactions, which I believe affects the Muslim community negatively and furthers the view that we "lie" about our religion to appeal to non-Muslims, which is absolutely not the case.

There is nothing about his marriage to Aisha RA or the exile and execution of certain Jewish tribes that should be embarrassing for Muslims to talk about. One of the things that I didn't like so much is how many of the companions of the Prophet SAW were introduced, and the way in which they were introduced. I understand that writing a biography of the Prophet SAW can hardly be an easy task, and that the sahaba were an integral part of his life's journey, but I felt that it was extremely confusing in that so many lineages were described, leaving me absolutely lost, and many people had the same given name.

At some point, I gave up trying to keep track of everyone because it was starting to ruin my reading experience. This biography is definitely a work of piety, but despite that, I think it is a good book for non-Muslims who want to learn more to read.

Yes, it can be a little tough to get into, but compared to other books of seerah, I think this one has a solid foundation on authentic sources, an easy-to-follow narrative, and a comprehensive timeline. It especially demonstrates how Islam came to unite the messages of the Abrahamic faiths and rid them of polytheism at last. Believed by Muslims to be a prophet and messenger of God, Muhammad is almost universally considered by Muslims as the last prophet sent by God to mankind. While non-Muslims generally regard Muhammad as the founder of Islam, Muslims consider him to have restored the unaltered original monotheistic faith of Prophet Adam, Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus, and other prophets. Prophet Muhammad taught us to love God and to obey Him. He taught us to be kind to each other, to respect our elders, and care for our children.

He taught us that it was better to give than to receive and that each human life is worthy of respect and dignity.

He taught us to love for our brothers and sisters what we love for ourselves. Prophet Muhammad taught us that families and communities are essential, and he pointed out that individual rights although important are not more important than a stable, moral society. I've had this book 3 times and each time it winds up going to live at someone else's house. Mind you, this book does not treat Muhammad or anyone or anything else objectively. Lists with This Book. That feeling of being in awe of the person is completely missing, and The thing with the Muslims writer in general is that when they start writing about the life and deeds of the Prophet they are so much in awe of the personality that they can barely portray him as a normal human being. One of the things that I didn't like so much is how many of the companions of the Prophet SAW were introduced, and the way in which they were introduced.
